CCC History
An essay by Doug A. Wagner

In the summer of 2003, a curious young boy is surfing the Internet. By chance, while searching Google for information of the upcoming game Pikmin 2, he stumbles upon a fan fiction site by the name of Yoshi Stadium. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this would be the first in a series of events playing a major role in the rest of his life…

It all started when I stumbled across the website Yoshi Stadium. I became intrigued with it, and within a week I had read all of its battles. After that, I became very bored, and went to one of Yoshi Stadium’s affiliates, The Pipe House, and read my first true sprite comic, Punchinello. I was amazed. To create a series of manipulated video game figures with hilarious text added in? How unheard of! I had to have more. And I did. In the corner of a fan comic I noticed a URL. I typed it in to the address bar, and was suddenly opened up to an entire spriting community. From there, I would read a few comics on the site, and if I liked them, I’d read them all. If they weren’t that good, or after I’d read them all, I’d click on the most interesting looking link, and repeat the cycle. Of the dozens of sites I went to and comics I read, I only still visit two of them: Fireball20xl, owned by Psyguy, the most awesome comic artist ever, and ShizNIT, the funniest comic series ever.

Everything got crazy once school started. Through my mounds of homework and complaints about evil teachers, I still found time to read comics, and even found some more sites worth book marking. Discontented with simply reading them, I began to print them out and show my friends. Although Ben and Morgan weren’t very impressed (Morgan even calling me obsessive), a strange giant shared my interest, and even stole some of my prints. This giant, known as Coty, and Ben started hanging out, sitting in the corner during PE instead of pitting termites and ants against each other with Morgan and me. Because of this I became rather sour, and for a time, hated Coty.

Eventually my curiosity overcame my bitterness, and I asked them what they were doing. They said they were making a hand-drawn comic series of their own, which they claimed they would eventually post on the Internet. I waved this off as crazy, but I still wanted know about their comics. Unfortunately, their conversations rarely seemed coherent, and they rarely answered my requests to explain. Fortunately, over time they started pitching their ideas to me and newcomer Robert, though he is currently mostly thought of as a poser.

Then, one February night, while reading the comic 8-Bit Theater, I got the urge to make my own sprite comic. I did so, and while it wasn’t that funny and was poorly made, I enjoyed it. I started inventing my own ideas for comics, and when I told Ben and Coty, they promised me a section of the site. Coty, using AOL membership perks, created the site. This beta version contained 4 sections: Dark Skarr Productions (Coty’s), Zentai Productions (Ben’s), Mitsubishi Productions (Ben and Coty’s friend’s), and Planet Dormss (mine). Coty christened this collaboration Chaos Comix. While it rarely ever got updated, the ideas were still churning. At one time Coty even had the idea to change the name to Kamikaze Komix, though I was strongly against the idea due to possible misconceptions of us being suicidal. After school was out, Ben and Coty adopted names from the video game Jet Set Radio Future, becoming Zero and Soda, respectively. Robert and I also eventually accepted the trend, donning the names Gum and Cube. Over the summer, Ben and Coty also found the website deviantART, and met many interested, talented comic artists who joined us, thus forming the Chaos Comix Clan, or CCC for short.

While many members have quit and rejoined, while numerous series ideas have been scrapped, while our homepage has changed URLs at least a dozen times, and layouts at least thirty times, while some members have been fired due to lack of doing anything, while Planet Dormss has spun off from Chaos Comix and formed its own site, the basis of the CCC remains the same: a group of friends coming together to make comics and spread chaos.
